Niagara-on-the-Lake is perhaps best known as the "home of the Shaw Festival", the world's only professional theatre company dedicated to the works of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.

Originally the site of the Neutral Indian Village of Onghiara, the British Government purchased the site for "300 suits of clothing" in 1781. Niagara-on-the-Lake, then known as Newwark, became the first capital of Upper Canada. The restored historic sites of Fort George and Fort Mississauga bear witness to life during the early days in the New World.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Ontario, is a perfect setting for a town voted "the prettiest town in Canada". Its streets abound with gardens and flowers, old estate homes, historical sites, mature trees, parks, antique or boutique shopping, art galleries and establishments for either casual or fine dining. The old town is surrounded by vineyards, fruit farms, estate wineries and farmers markets. Nearby villages of Queenston, St.Davids and Virgil, and a recreational path along the river, add even more charm and history to the area.
